OPERATION "SALMONBELLIES LACROSSE"
New Westminster, BC -- The New Westminster Sr. Salmonbellies are pleased to announce "Operation Salmonbellies Lacrosse" in conjunction with our partners New Westminster Minor Lacrosse, New Westminster Jr. Salmonbellies, BC Lacrosse Association, our suppliers, Warrior Lacrosse, Scoffs Hockey Shop and Hamilton Sportswear Co Ltd. along with the City of New Westminster and Dawn Black, Member of Parliament. The initiative will see 30 Warrior lacrosse sticks and balls, 30 Salmonbellies 2008 WLA Championship t-shirts and other lacrosse related items shipped to Canadian Armed Forces Base Kandahar, Afghanistan for use by personnel stationed there.

"During the recent WLA playoffs, it came to our attention that the Salmonbellies had quite a few fans stationed in Khandahar, following our progress at the Mann Cup through the internet," said Dan Richardson, President and General Manager of the New Westminster Senior Salmonbellies. "We posted their emails of support in our dressing room during the playoffs for inspiration."

"When one of them requested some lacrosse equipment so that the troops could enjoy Canada?s Official Summer Sport while in Afghanistan, we jumped at it," he added.

After returning from the 2008 Mann Cup, Richardson sent out e-mails/ phone calls to suppliers, BCLA and the Minors and Juniors in New Westminster and put a call into the New Westminster Mayor?s Office. The City liaised with staff in the local Member of Parliament?s office to come up with a plan of how to get the equipment to soldiers at Khandahar base.

"The City of New Westminster is proud to play a part in this great initiative," said Mayor Wayne Wright. "Our historic ties with the Armed Forces through the Royal Westminster Regiment combined with our close connection to the legendary Salmonbellies make it a great fit."

The package is currently in transit to Canadian Armed Forces in Ottawa for shipment by military transport to Khandahar.

"In a matter of days "Operation Salmonbellies Lacrosse" fell into place as everyone stepped up to the plate," said Richardson. "It?s the right thing to do, after all, these men and women of our Armed Forces, are sticking their neck on the line 24 / 7, half a world away."
